Gym Gear in Technicolor

Change is a foot, literally. It’s hard to miss the rainbow of furious feet peddling and pushing themselves at the gym these days. Light, bright sneakers in pops of neon orange, purple, pink, and yellow and workout gear in patterns and bold brights. The gym these days is exploding with color, and thanks to endless products being pushed by manufacturers — Nike, Lululemon, Under Armor, and more — it doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon.

How did we get here? Karen Moriarty, buyer and co-owner of Sportech in Rye Brook, says, “It started with the kids, but it’s definitely crossed age barriers… working its way to moms and dads. First with footwear and then transitioned into field apparel and runningwear, you name it.” She adds, “Crazy patterns, lots of pops… the kids, that’s all they walk around in.”

In terms of gym apparel for women, the black pant is still a staple, but accent colors are layered on with sneakers and tops. For those that want to be noticed, there are certainly many options these days for colorful bottoms — bright blue, reds, patterns, it runs the gamut.

This color fad is not reserved for kids and women. Moriarty says she was surprised that colors once reserved for women have become bestsellers for men — neon pink and yellow, among them.

Color rules.
