Heard in Rye: Julie Lythcott-Haims

WriterSpeakerHuman

Julie Lythcott-Haims believes in humans and is deeply interested in what gets in our way of being good humans. The author of The New York Times bestselling anti-helicopter parenting manifesto, “How to Raise an Adult”, her TED Talk on the subject has more than 5 million views. In 2020, she became a regular contributor on parenting for “CBS This Morning”. Her second book, the critically acclaimed and award-winning prose poetry memoir “Real American”, illustrates her experience as a Black and biracial person. A third book, “Your Turn: How to Be an Adult”, will be published next month.

A former corporate lawyer and Stanford University dean, Lythcott-Haims holds a BA from Stanford, a JD from Harvard, and an MFA in Writing from California College of the Arts. She serves on the board of Common Sense Media, and on the advisory board of LeanIn.Org. She volunteers with the hospital program, No One Dies Alone

This exceptional human will be leading two “Heard in Rye” workshops on April 15. Admission is free; all are welcome. From 12-1:30, she’ll speak on “How to Raise Successful Kids — Without Overparenting”. Drawing on her research, conversations with educators and admission officers, and own insights as a mother and the former Dean of Freshman at Stanford, she’ll highlight the ways in which overparenting harms kids and prevents them from developing self-efficacy: the knowledge that one’s own actions lead to outcomes.

She’ll offer practical strategies that underline the importance of allowing children to make their own mistakes and develop resilience, resourcefulness, and the inner determination necessary to become healthy, thriving adults.

In an evening workshop from 7-8:30, Lythcott-Haims turns her attention to “Your Turn: How to Be an Adult”.

Many young adults speak about feeling not quite ready “to adult.” Many are not even sure if they want to. What role are we parents playing in this process? With her trademark storytelling style, Lythcott-Haims will speak frankly on the best ways to support young adults in their all-important transition to a healthy and happy adulthood.

“Heard in Rye” presentations are also available on RYETV when permitted by the speaker.
