The Southern Westchester and Southern Connecticut ice hockey clubs and school teams were united to take on a common rival, hunger, January 25-February 2.

 

The Southern Westchester and Southern Connecticut ice hockey clubs and school teams were united to take on a common rival, hunger, January 25-February 2. Local food drives take place mostly around the holiday season. However, during January and the height of the winter as hockey season hits full swing, the demand for food increases but contributions drastically decrease.

During the designated Hockey vs. Hunger week, teams organized collections from their players, opponents, and fans for the most needed items at the Carver Center food pantry. The food collections took place at both practices and games. For the past two years the Rye Rangers have successfully organized a food drive for the Carver Center. This year’s Hockey vs. Hunger campaign was expanded to include the following club and school teams.

Hockey Clubs and Camps: Erik Nates Euro Hockey, Greenwich Blues Hockey Association, Mariners Hockey, and Rye Rangers Hockey Club

School Hockey Teams: Greenwich High School, Rye Country Day School, Rye High School, Rye Middle School, and Rye Town/Harrison Titans

Each of the teams collected the food independently. On three separate days the teams met at the Carver Center in Port Chester and together unloaded all of the donated food and stocked the shelves in the food pantry. “It was impressive to see rival teams work together so cooperatively at Carver,” said a parent. A Carver Center spokesperson told us, “We are overwhelmed by the commitment of the players and the generosity of these organizations.”
