On a recent beautiful fall night, many gathered for the official opening of the new Rye High School Science Wing Courtyard. A Garnets “G” is the centerpiece of the peaceful and beautifully landscaped brick enclosure in which magnificent weeping Katsura trees are surrounded by handsome metal and wood benches. Each of the benches bears a plaque with a dedication or quote from the family or individual who sponsored it. The bricks throughout the courtyard are also sponsored and engraved. Both benches and bricks are still available and all proceeds benefit the Rye Fund for Education.

Dr. Alvarez led the dedication, calling out a special thanks to Sam Carder, Director of Facilities, and Gabriella O’Connor, Superintendent for Business, both of whom worked very hard to get the courtyard ready in time. Patricia Taylor, RHS Principal, Laura Slack, President of the Rye Fund for Education and Katy Keohane-Glassberg, President of the Board of Education, also participated in the night’s speeches and accolades.

The lovely ambiance of the night was further enhanced by music performed by a four-piece string ensemble of students and teacher Lynn Kraut.

In a noteworthy coincidence, the saws used to cut the bricks to make the shape of the Garnet “G” used garnet dust in the cutting process.
