With the start of the new school year, Rye Boy Scout Troop 2 is back on active duty. That’s not to say that the action stopped over the summer as Rye scouts were canoeing in Minnesota, summer camping in the Adirondacks at Camp Read, and working on local service projects at the Rye Nature Center, the Marshlands Conservancy, and in local churches.

At its October 21 meeting, the Troop conducted its Fall Court of Honor, which was led by the troop’s advancement chairman, Richard LaMagna, and senior patrol leader Chris Tobin. Eighteen scouts advanced in rank, including six newly minted Eagles: Reid Bradt, Sean Byrne, Tim Hardis, Peter MacKenzie, Brandon Olivier, and Zachary Unkenholz. A dedicated Eagle Court of Honor will be conducted at Rye Presbyterian Church on Sunday, November 9 for Eagles Olivier and Byrne.

In addition to awarding 128 merit badges, three special awards were presented: the Cyber Chip for Internet safety, Triple Crown of National High Adventure, and a BSA Life Guard.

Upcoming events announced at the meeting include trips to two of Scouting’s High Adventure bases. In February, a group will hit the surf for scuba diving at Sea Base. In July, another groupwill head to New Mexico to hike the peaks of the Philmont Scout Ranch. During the school year there will be regular hikes and camping on the Appalachian Trail, at Harriman State Park, and at the Durland Scout reservation.

If your son is interested in joining in the fun, drop by one of the troop’s regular meetings every Tuesday evening at 7:30 at Rye Presbyterian Church. Alternatively, contact Scoutmaster John Tobin at 6Tobin5@optoline.net or Troop Committee Chair Bob Zahm at BobZahm@gmail.com.
