Holy Child’s indoor track team had their best year ever, breaking school records in almost every event. Two of the runners, senior Joshane Wakefield and junior Miffy Riley qualified for the state championships, which will be held March 7 at Cornell University. Wakefield set two school records: with a time of 7:36 in the 55-meter dash and a time of 40.24 in the 300m. Riley, who came in second to Wakefield in the 55 at the state qualifier meet February 12, qualified with a time of 7.62. This will be Wakefield’s fourth appearance at States in the 300m, and her first in the 55. Riley is headed to States for the first time.

In addition to her state qualifying times, Wakefield set a school record in the 200m with a time of 25.94. She and Riley, along with Christine Altomare and Kailah Brinson comprised the record-breaking 4x200m relay team. Their time was 1:48.9. The 4x400m relay team of Wakefield, Brinson, Altomare, and Margaret Brady set a record of 4:18. Brady was also part of the 4x800m team that ran a record-breaking 10:42. Her teammates were Cameron Kellett, Emily Fray, and Augustina Garate-Griot. Sedinam Anyidoho set a new record in shot put with a distance of 28’1”.

Coach Mike Simon, who coaches cross-country as well as indoor and outdoor track, said about his track team, “I have a great group of leaders on this team, so much so that on many occasions I can take a step back and allow them to coach themselves!” He added, “The goal of nearly every team member is to go to States and reach the next level. Joshane and Miffy are prime examples of this. I consider myself lucky to be a part of this program, and all the credit should be given to all the Holy Child athletes that run on the track team.”
