Holy Child’s softball team topped Rye Country Day School 17-5 in an away game on May 4.

The Panthers took off running, literally. Lead off batter Julianna Capasso hit a triple, propelling her team to score five runs in the first inning. The Wildcats failed to score after leadoff batter Sydney Ginsberg was left on third base at the end of the inning.

The Panthers tallied three more runs in each of the next four innings.

On the mound, Panther pitcher Molly Leitner, a freshman, had seven strikeouts. She also had two hits, slamming in five runs.

The Panthers are 9-3. Holy Child Coach Jen Cirillo said she’s proud of her team’s high quality of play. The top four batters are freshmen.

“It’s so much fun seeing so much talent in the freshman class and it’s a great lift for the program,’’ Cirillo said. “This is the strongest class of young softball players we’ve seen in a long time.”

RCDS Coach Margaret Scarcella said Leitner kept her Wildcat batters off balance the entire game.

The Wildcats, now 3-5, have just one senior; the rest of the team is comprised of freshman and sophomores. Their top four batters are freshmen, including pitcher Eve Wulf. Coach Scarcella said her team has shown a lot of improvement since the start of the season.
