The Wildcats and the Gryphons scrimmaged in late March to fine tune their squads and begin shaping up for teams they will compete against in the Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) this spring. With no cuts made prior to the showdown, both sides sported roughly 35 players, all of them played.  

 

And last week, both local lacrosse teams came out swinging: Holy Child topped Greenwich Academy, 14-4, and Rye Country Day School edged King, 7-6.

 

“We got a great opportunity to play everyone and really see what we’re working with this season,” said Georgette Summers, the RCDS girls’ varsity lacrosse coach. “It was very productive, we hadn’t made any other cuts, so we needed this opportunity to shape the team and take inventory before our first game.’’

 

The Holy Child scrimmage against RCDS consisted of three 25-minute periods in which both teams were able to work kinks out and settle into the more permanent shape they will take on for the regular season. Fresh off a spring break training trip to Orlando where the girls benefited from scrimmaging three other teams, the Holy Child showdown was just what both teams needed to solidify their rosters and allocate their talent most efficiently.

 

In describing her team and her prospects this season, Coach Summers is confident. “We have a lot of experience coming back along with great fresh talent.”

 

Coach Summers thinks the Wildcats can challenge perennial powerhouse Greenwich Academy for the FAA championship this year,

 

“It’s a lofty goal; G.A. has won every year in a row for about a quarter-century,” she said.

 

Last year, the Wildcats advanced to the finals of the New York State Association of Independent Schools invitational tournament, but were stopped in the third round of the FAA.
