HOLY CHILD TRACK: Gryphons Running All the Way to Ithaca Through the Snow

This year’s recurring snowstorms wreaked havoc upon the Holy Child track team’s training and meet schedule.

This year’s recurring snowstorms wreaked havoc upon the Holy Child track team’s training and meet schedule. With the qualifying event for States postponed to Tuesday, February 18 (too late for this edition), Coach Mike Simon’s charges have to keep running. And hoping.

“Despite all that, we still have a few athletes that have the athleticism to make the State championships,” the coach said. “Joshane Wakefield is one of our strongest sprinters and is teaming with the rest of our 4×200 quartet   — Arnell Stewart, Miffy Riley, and Christine Altomare — to make it to Ithaca.”

Coached Simon praised his captains for keeping everyone focused. “We have a lot of seniors on the team that have been a part of Holy Child track since their freshmen and sophomore years: Jolie Brakey, Tanya Slipsager, Imani Sherrill, Maeve McGowan, and Chioma Nwana, to name a few. Jolie is one of our captains who’ll be running in the 1,000-meter state qualifier.”

He also pointed to shot putters Sedinam Anyidoho and Gabby Iarocci as two possible qualifiers and praised sophomore newcomer Anna Liddy. “With all the snow and days off, its hard to pinpoint a most improved runner or thrower. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how everyone performs at our qualifier meet.”

The State Track & Field Championships will be held at Cornell University March 1. The Gryphons of Holy Child should be well represented.
