It Takes a Village – of Contributors

Next year, The Rye Record celebrates its 19th year of publication. While there were only two issues in 1996, before long the paper went to a monthly, then every three weeks, and finally an every-other-week schedule, most of the year.

What we celebrate most is our longtime contributors and columnists who continue to surprise and delight.

“I grew up in Rye, and I contacted the paper soon after it got going to ask if they would like any contributions or photos.”

“During my term on the Rye City Council, I got to know Robin. After I left the Council in 2000, she asked me to contribute articles on city and financial issues. I gradually began writing about other issues, and now mostly focus on writing articles on art, which is another of my favorite subjects and led me to become a docent, first at the Neuberger, then at the Bruce Museum.”

“We had just moved to Rye from New York City, and I heard The Rye Record was looking for writers. I wanted to continue working, so I thought it was a good way to get going again with a 1-year-old at home.”

“As my sons like to remind me, I was an editor at a community newspaper (The Westport News) as a young woman, and I’m going out as a longtime editor (now publisher) of a community newspaper. Life is filled with irony. I left that first paper because I wanted to do something “important”, e.g. magazine editor. Well, I got that wish at Good Housekeeping and Self, and a few you haven’t heard of, and let me assure you that working at Dolores Eyler’s and Allen Clark’s kitchen tables was so much more fun and interesting than in the conference rooms at Hearst and Conde Nast.”

“My best friend Will Jovanovich and I were interested in film making. In 2003 I began contributing regular film reviews to The Rye Record, and now it has blossomed into a full-time business.”

“I was sitting next to Carla Eggers at a Little League game, and she told me The Rye Record was looking for someone to write a ‘mom’ column. I’ve been writing ‘Along for the Rye’d’ for the last three years (and two young adult novels to boot).”

“I was first a reader of the paper, and became a contributor after the 2007 flood. I was up at the Bowman Dam and took 60 to 70 photos of storm run-off, and ended up writing an article. I have been a contributor ever since.”
