Jack Stavrides, a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, died on September 28, 2002. A lifelong resident of Rye, N.Y., he was 94.

Born on October 26, 1927, he was the son of Katerina and Demetrios Stavrides. He spent much of his youth at the Rye YMCA, where he enjoyed bowling, boxing, and playing pool and ping-pong. He attended Rye schools, where he excelled as a math student and track athlete. He graduated Rye High School in 1945. He proudly served with the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

For over twenty years, Mr. Stavrides worked for the Rye Department of Works and was a volunteer fireman with the Rye Engine and Hose Company.

An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of Rye Golf Club. A man of faith, he was devoted parishioner of the Greek Orthodox Church of Our Saviour in Rye, where he served as a council member.

He loved all animals and was particularly fond of feeding the squirrels that visited him in his backyard.

Mr. Stavrides is survived by his brother, Anthony Stavrides of Patterson, N.Y., as well as his loving nieces and nephews: Theresa DeLorenzo, James Stavrides, and Nicholas Stavrides of Rye, Susan Venuto of Norwalk, Conn., and William Stavrides of Patterson. He was predeceased by his twin brother Jordan and his brother Timothy.

Funeral services were held October 1 at the Greek Orthodox Church of Our Saviour and he was buried at Greenwood Union Cemetery in Rye.
