A Rye salesman was mugged and robbed the afternoon of June 13 while securing two satchels of jewelry on Locust Avenue near Mead Place.

 

The salesman with R & M Woodrow Jewelers was being checked for injuries about 3 p.m. Police had not yet released his name or a detailed description of the robbery suspects in the theft.

 

Police Commissioner William Connors said two or three men fled west on Locust and south on Theodore Fremd Avenue in a dark-colored SUV, possibly a gray Honda.

 

The salesman left the Purchase Street jewelry store about 1:30 p.m. to secure two satchels of jewelry in his car trunk, said Connors, who added that the thieves might have been following him. The estimated wholesale value of the stolen jewels is $50,000.

 

The suspects yelled at the salesman and approached him behind as he opened his car trunk, Connors said. They pushed the salesman down to the ground, took the jewels, and fled to a SUV parked nearby before driving south. No weapons were displayed, and the salesman remained on the ground until police arrived, according to Connors.

 

Emergency Medical Services was checking the salesman for injuries. Part of Locust Avenue was closed during the investigation of the crime scene. Westchester County police and its K-9 unit assisted. Police reviewed security cameras to see if the salesman was followed.
