James Harten Finneran, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on May 16, 2023. A longtime resident of Rye, N.Y., he was 76.

Born on March 10, 1947, in White Plains, New York, he was the son of Sherman and Margaret Harten Finneran. Jim, as he was known, attended Archbishop Stepinac High School before earning a Bachelor of Science in Business at Manhattan College. After graduation, he become a restauranteur and, in 1982, he opened The Pub, which became a treasured Rye establishment.  

Throughout his life, his family brought him the greatest joy. In 1979, he married Theresa (Teri) MacMahon, who he had known growing up in White Plains, and later reconnected with through Teri’s brother, John. Their nearly 44-year marriage was a testament to the power of a strong and enduring partnership. Together, they created a beautiful family, and he took great pride in watching them grow. He cherished every moment spent with family and his love, wisdom, and laughter were limitless.   

Known for his chili and clam chowder, he also enjoyed golfing, spending summer vacations on Cape Cod, and cheering for the New York Rangers. He was a pillar of the Rye community, serving as a volunteer fireman and proprietor of The Pub. 

He will be dearly missed and long remembered for his warmth, generosity, and zest for life.  

In addition to his wife Teri, he is survived by his daughters, Meghan Grant of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Kathleen (Sean) McCorry of Rye; his grandsons, Finn William McCorry and Jack Declan McCorry; and his sister, Ann Sullivan. He was predeceased by his brothers Bob and Tom Finneran. 

A funeral service was held May 20 at Church of the Resurrection in Rye.
