John Plunkett

John Hancock Plunkett Sr. of Rye passed away peacefully on July 14, 2018, surrounded by his loving family, at Greenwich Hospital. He was 83.

Born on April 7, 1935 in New Rochelle, he was the son of Evelyn (Hancock) and Harold J. Plunkett.

He graduated from Rye Country Day School, Deerfield Academy, Dartmouth College and attended The Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

An avid and gifted jazz guitar player during college, he played with the traveling USO Jazz Band. His passion for playing jazz on the guitar and piano continued throughout his life.

Mr. Plunkett began his business career at Citibank, followed by Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., and went on to become a partner and financial advisor at Thorsen, Brown and Plunkett, Inc. from which he retired.

He was a member of the Apawamis Club for over forty years. He enjoyed playing golf, bridge, and traveling with family and friends.

In addition to his wife of 35 years, Diana Luce Plunkett, he is survived by his children from a previous marriage, Ashley (Richard) Trivett, Amy (John) Osten, and John Plunkett Jr.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves his sister, Penny (Dr. Milton F.) Campbell, and four nieces.

“John will be remembered for his ability to comfort family, friends, and clients with his deep resonating voice,” said his wife.
