Lions Club Athlete of the Month — Melissa Fulenwider

 

Throughout her Rye High years, Melissa Fulenwider earned national recognition for her hard work in the classroom as well as the swimming pool. Her fifth annual trip to the State Championships last month also earned her recognition as the Lions Club Athlete for November.

 

Throughout her Rye High years, Melissa Fulenwider earned national recognition for her hard work in the classroom as well as the swimming pool. Her fifth annual trip to the State Championships last month also earned her recognition as the Lions Club Athlete for November.

 

Fulenwider was on the 400-meter freestyle relay team that placed 10th at States, swimming their fastest time of the year. The senior also placed fifth in the 100-meter breaststroke and eighth in the 100-meter freestyle at States.

 

She has competed in Junior Nationals twice and is up for All-America consideration in the breaststroke.

 

Fulenwider has been named twice to the Scholastic All-America Team. The AP Scholar also received a National Merit Commendation and the Harvard-Radcliffe University Book Award.  

 

She studies and performs modern dance twice weekly and is active with Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse, leading discussions with middle and elementary school students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

 

She’s also worked as a camp counselor for Rye Rec and Camp Shenorock, supervising swimming and diving lessons.

 

The RHS senior has been accepted to Princeton where she will swim with the Tigers.
