Ana Sobalvarro took over the reins at Blush in 2009.

Ana Sobalvarro took over the reins at Blush in 2009. At the time, it was the only beauty bar in town and its merchandise revolved solely around skin care and beauty products. With a proliferation of spas and shops in town and an unpredictable economy, downtown’s longtime beauty emporium at 34 Purchase Street has shed its old skin.

Today, in addition to carrying the fine natural skin care and bath and body products customers rely upon, Blush offers an impressive selection of costume jewelry, including semi precious stones, beads and crystals. It also offers a broad selection of gift items, fragrant candles, diffusers, and vanity table accessories.

To keep things interesting, Sobalvarro has introduced a selection of handmade products from local artisans. She features a line of handcrafted organic, glycerin soaps from one local vendor and a Bayberry Naturals line of shampoos, shower gels, and body scrubs from another. For children, she offers a colorful selection of handcrafted children’s hair accessories, as well as crocheted hats and miniature shoes for infants. Even Sobalvarro’s mother has gotten into the act with a beautiful selection of hand-sewn jewelry pouches and make-up bags.

Of course, Blush will always offer its fine spa services, its signature Decleor European facial, teen acne facial, and waxing. Also still on hand are Blush’s staples, including Thyme, Kat Burki, Glo-therapeutics, and Archipelago Botanicals beauty lines.

“My loyal customers play a large role in my business. They know I provide personal customer service,” said Sobalvarro, who is always at the shop. “It’s not just about selling merchandise. It’s about creating relationships.”
