Mary Frances Carey passed away peacefully on March 2, 2018. She was a longtime resident of Rye, parishioner of Church of the Resurrection, and member of Westchester Country Club.
Born on April 1, 1925 in Jersey City, New Jersey, Fifi, as she was affectionately known, was the eldest of nine children.
An avid sports fan, she was a pioneer of the MITL (Metropolitan Interclub Tennis League). She served as President of School of the Holy Child and the Sacred Heart Mother’s Club, as well as The First Twig of Harrison. She enjoyed playing bridge with her dear friends and spending time with her family.
She was matriarch of 286 descendants of the Maguire family.
She was the loving wife of J. Paul Carey, who predeceased her. Mrs. Carey is survived by her five daughters and their spouses, Kathryn Strom (Michael Misisco), Anne (Brian) Keenan, Virginia (Mark) McBride, Helen (Mathew) McConnell, and Barbara (Mark) Vermylen; 21 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Frank and Paul Maguire, and her sisters, Kathleen Tierney and Regina McDonald.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated March 9 at 10 a.m. at Church of the Resurrection. Donations in Mary Frances Carey’s memory may be made to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation (crohnscolitisfoundation.org).
