Mathnasium Is Taking Students to a Higher Power

Math is a subject that plagues many of us at some point in our academic lives. Whether the trouble arises from algebraic fractions or limits in calculus, math has its challenges. Luckily, local students can count on Mathnasium, a new tutoring center specifically for mathematics, grades K-12.

Michael Covino opened up a Mathnasium at 275 Purchase Street across from Rockridge; it’s one of over 100 domestic and international locations. Covino decided to open the center after his two children had positive experiences at another area Mathnasium.

Within a few months, Covino said that not only did his children’s math grades improve, but their academic success and confidence increased as well.

As a native of Rye Brook, who graduated from Blind Brook High School, Covino knew that Rye would be a perfect location for Mathnasium because of its tight-knit community atmosphere and dedication to education.

What sets Mathnasium apart from other tutoring centers, explained Corvino, is their highly individualized approach. There are no group classes offered, and they are not required to follow any school-set curriculum. Each child is offered a free assessment, with written and oral components, which allows staff members to create a lesson plan tailored to meet the student’s unique needs and goals.

For example, Covino recounted that one of the most frequent and trying challenges that children face in math is fractions. Rather than trying to keep teaching kids how to handle fractions in a way that they do not understand, Mathnasium instructors take a step back and get to the core issue. They will use manipulatives, or visuals, to put fractions in perspective and the complex language of math in comprehensive terms.

Whether it is to catch up or to get ahead in math, Mathnasium is an excellent resource for students of all ages. With another school year fast approaching, now is a good time to register your child for a free assessment. Visit www.mathnasium.com/rye or call 967-MATH.

During the school year, Mathnasium is open Monday-Thursday from 3-7 and Saturdays from 9:30-1.
