Men of Steel, Gallery of Greats

We’ve taken a shine to AiBo Gallery, the fine contemporary art establishment that opened on Purdy Avenue in downtown Rye last year. There is always something eye-catching in the window that draws an art lover in. This month, there are more than the usual number of wondrous works on display because gallery owner Glenn Aber and assistant director Alice Sung have begun a collaboration with two world-renowned South Korean sculptors; and they are putting the finishing touches on an exhibit, “Glass and Stainless-Steel Sculpture,” that opens Thursday, Feb. 29 with a reception from 5 to 8.

Sculptors Jung Kuk Taek and Lee Song Joon, each brings a unique style that is detailed and refined in its own way. Taek, who was born in 1971, focuses on everyday people making their way in modern times. His figures are busy people carrying briefcases and cell phones and flying on planes. His sculptures are whimsical. Through his depictions, he allows people to identify their place in society, which creates an empathetic bond with the viewer.

Recognized for pushing boundaries, Lee Song Joon sculptures light up the imagination, literally — LED lights on stainless-steel balls reflect and refract the surrounding environment. They express the ambiguity between reality and virtuality in physical space. They create a glittering effect of “indefinite continuity.”

Don’t miss the gallery opening on Feb. 29, where you will also have the pleasure of seeing works by these two sensational sculptors.
