Strangefolk Indeed

  

Strangefolk will be appearing at The Capitol Theater Thanksgiving weekend. Formed at the University of Vermont as an acoustic duo in 1991, the band has performed on the national stage over the course of the last two decades, traversing the country and sharing the stage with the likes of Dave Mathews, The Grateful Dead, and Phish.

 

In September 2000, following the band’s annual Eden Festival in New Haven, Vermont, founding member and main songwriter Reid Genauer left the band to pursue a graduate degree at Cornell University.

A Rye twist to their tale is that after grad school, and founding his current band, Assembly of Dust Reid, Genauer moved to our town. Genauer, now the father of three, continues to tour when he’s not cheering on the sidelines of Rye Youth Soccer or proudly watching “hiyas!” at Bruce Chung’s Tai Kwon Do.

 

Strangefolk reunited this year after a 12-year hiatus and was greeted with an overwhelmingly warm welcome from fans that had not forgotten these plaid-clad folk rockers. On the heels of six sold-out shows in New England, Strangefolk comes to The Capitol Theater for two nights, November 23 and 24. Odds are there will be at least one familiar face in attendance.

 

In an interview, Genauer said that Peter Shapiro, who re-opened The Capitol, “has always been a fan and supporter of the band. When he was in the process of planning the opening he got us all on the horn and basically told us we were reuniting. . . .It feels awesome. We intend to blow the roof off.”

Lea — Houis

Kyla Sacripante Lea and Schuyler Voorhees Houis were married on October 27 at the Rye home of the groom’s grandmother, Barbara Taylor. Christopher Taylor, the groom’s uncle, performed the ceremony, and family and friends were in attendance.

The bride is the daughter of Desolina Sacripante and Christopher Lea of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She is a student of Linguistics at Concordia University in Montreal.

The groom is the son of Jacques and Shelley Houis of Kent, Connecticut, formerly of Rye. A graduate of Rye High School and Berklee College of Music in Boston, he is a professional musician.

After celebrations in Brooklyn, New York and Kent, Connecticut, the couple returned to their home in Montreal.

Births

Muffy and Scott Hazard of New Canaan announce the birth of twin boys August 16.

Scott Winslow Jr. (right) weighed 5 pounds, 8 ounces, and Maximilian Schaefer (left) weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces.

Their maternal grandparents are the late Lucy and Peer Pedersen of Rye.
