Trooping to Rockaway

On a recent Saturday, Rye Boy Scout Troop 2 headed off to Rockaway, Queens to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy. The boys handed out bag lunches, water, candy, and freshly grilled hot dogs and hamburgers.

 

It all started early that morning when 15 scouts went to the Elks Lodge in Mamaroneck and made 200-plus sandwiches and bag lunches. Adriane Defeo, mother of a Troop 2 Scout, organized all of the food for the troop’s assembly line.

 

Before noon, Scouts Jake Moore, Sal Morlino, Testufumi Nomura, Jackson Steele, Grant Sundstrom, Jack Tenny, Luca Villani, and Gabriel Zangiacomi, along with Scoutmaster Bill Haigney, Assistant Scoutmasters Paul Moore and Paulo Zangiacomi, and parents Adriane Defeo, Naoki Nomura, Jimmie Sundstrom, and Bob Zahm, arrived at St. Camillus School on Beach 99th Street. They found themselves part of a carnival, which was a larger effort to brighten the day of those still in need of assistance, right by one of the shelters supplying the families in the area with food, blankets, and other necessities. Hot coffee, soup, and lunches were very much appreciated.

 

Later that afternoon, Sal Morlino arrived along with Ray Quartararo, Rye Cub Scout pack leader, his two sons, Michael and Matthew, and wife Lynn. They quickly set up the grill and served up hot dogs and hamburgers. By 6 p.m., everything had been distributed, tables and grill packed up, and everyone was on their way back to Rye — with a clear view of how much more can be done.

A Fashionable Tribute

 

The Auxiliary Board of St. Vincent’s Hospital Westchester, a division of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, hosted its 57th Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show last month at Westchester Country Club. Saks Fifth Avenue Greenwich was in charge of the show, which included an Oscar de la Renta holiday collection for children. Proceeds from the event support St. Vincent’s mental health and addiction treatment services.

 

Highlighting the event were presentations paying tribute to longtime St. Vincent’s supporters: Marie and George Doty and Florence D’Urso. Mr. Doty and Mrs. D’Urso died within days of each other earlier this year and Mrs. Doty passed away in 2008.

 

Members of the Doty and D’Urso families, in accepting the awards in their memory, spoke of their parents’ support of St. Vincent’s and its mission.
