After an exciting preseason, Rye’s volleyball team stumbled out of the gate, losing matches to Rye Neck, Mamaroneck, Port Chester, and Valhalla, beating only Nyack at the Sleepy Hollow tournament September 10. Head coach Andrea Reiff took positives from the Valhalla match, however.

“It was the first time we didn’t beat ourselves,” she said. “We worked on keeping the ball in play and making better decisions. Valhalla is a very good team. Unfortunately, they outplayed us.”

The Garnets broke through in a big way September 19, sweeping Alexander Hamilton 3-0. “The win proves we’re improving with each match,” said Reiff. “This is a young team which still has last year’s losing season on their minds, and that’s hard to overcome.” The coach is optimistic their hard work will pay off.

They won’t lack for opportunities. After a tournament at Mamaroneck September 24, they come home to face Rye Neck and Pleasantville September 26 and 27.

In the midst of a jam-packed schedule, the entire varsity and many of their moms will be volunteering at the Jarden Westchester Triathlon. Then it’s DIG PINK WEDNESDAY, October 5 at 4:30, against Port Chester. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and DIG PINK is a national campaign run by volleyball programs to raise both awareness and funds.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game and make donations to support the cause. If you cannot attend the game, you can make a donation by going to denimday.com. Click Donate and Donate to a Team, and enter “RYE VOLLEYBALL”, or use Team ID #244788.
