Douglas McClure

Douglas Ketcham McClure of Rye, beloved husband of Ruth Lind McClure, died peacefully at home August 19, after a long battle with cancer. He was 60.

 

He was born September 17, 1951, in New Rochelle, to Elizabeth (Ketcham) and Carl H. McClure III of New Rochelle. The family moved to Rye when he was a young boy.

 

After attending Rye Country Day School, he graduated from the Hun School. He received a B. A. in Business from Iona College. Mr. McClure spent his professional life in real estate.

 

He was a member of the Bronxville Bombers, a shooting group of like-minded gentlemen, and Apawamis Club, where he served on the Board of Governors for many years.

 

Known for his warmth and keen sense of humor, he loved all that surrounded him.

 

In addition to his wife of 34 years, he is survived by his mother, Elizabeth McClure; his sisters, Marilyn Plumb Beck of Bedford and Dawn McClure Morton of Annapolis, Md.; seven nephews; and eight nieces. He was predeceased by his father, Carl H. McClure III and by his sister, Marcy McClure Parker.

 

A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 6, at 4 p.m. at Rye Presbyterian Church.

Dale Strang

Dale Evan Strang of Leesburg, Florida, passed away August 4. He was 74.

 

He was born May 23, 1938 in Rye to Evelyn and Royal Strang. A proud veteran of the Marine Corps, Mr. Strang served his community as police officer for 27 years in Miami-Dade, Florida.

 

He enjoyed traveling, camping in his RV, and watching NASCAR.

 

His family said, “He was truly loved and will be dearly missed by family and friends.”

 

Mr. Strang is survived by his loving wife and childhood sweetheart of 54 years, Mary Ann Connors Strang; his sister, Beverly Lennon; three daughters: Linda Lavorgna, Lori Gale, and Susan Veal; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. 

 

Funeral services were held August 10 at Faith Lutheran Church in Eustis, Florida.

Brendan Hughes

 

Brendan N. Hughes of the Bronx, formerly of Rye, passed away suddenly August 31. He was 60.

 

Born to John and Irene (Neville) Hughes, he grew up in Rye and attended Resurrection Grammar School and Rye High School.

 

After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he worked for ABC as a member of IUOE Local 30 for more than 25 years. As a stationary engineer, Mr. Hughes was responsible for the operation and maintenance of a wide range of equipment.

 

Mr. Hughes had a passion for boating and fishing.

 

He will be deeply missed by brothers of John, Michael, and Christopher, and many nieces, nephews, and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, MaryBeth Hughes-Harley.

 

The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home Friday, September 7 from 5 to 9 p.m. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Resurrection September 8 at 10 a.m.

Mildred Isaacs

 

Mildred Charlotte Isaacs passed away peacefully on August 26, a year and a half after the devastating loss of her beloved husband of 70 years, Abner.

 

Born to Jesse and Muriel Hoffman, she was raised in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and was a resident of Merrick, N.Y. for 60 years, before moving to The Osborn in Rye.

 

She graduated from Brooklyn College with a B.A. in Speech and Drama, and earned her Master’s in Speech and Audiology from C.W. Post. Her lifelong love of the theatre was nurtured in starring roles in high school and college productions. She continued to receive acclaim for her dramatic talents later in life for performances at PEIR, Hofstra University’s Personal Enrichment Program, which she and her late husband avidly attended.

 

Following her graduation from college, Mrs. Isaacs was a buyer at Macy’s. She left to join her husband in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he was stationed as a major in the Air Force Supply Corps. In her forties she earned her Master’s degree and became a speech therapist at the BOCES Rosemary Kennedy School in Wantagh, N.Y., working for almost 20 years with teenagers with developmental challenges. She brought joy to their lives and those of their families with her writing and direction of annual student musicals, adapted from beloved Broadway shows.

 

Mrs. Isaacs is survived by her daughter, Jane (Jim) Fox of New Canaan; her daughter-in-law, Charlotte LaRue Isaacs of Sarasota, Fla. and Katama, Mass.; four grandchildren, Robert and Catherine Isaacs and William and Amanda Fox; and a brother, Alan J. Hoffman of Greenwich. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son Jonathan, and an infant grandson, Adam.
