By day, while raising her children, you would find Janice Lynn Moore happily harmonizing with the radio in the old station wagon, politely breaking the speed limit in order to shuttle her four noisy kids to and from an array of lessons, classes, rehearsals, recitals, procedures, and occasional court appearances.

 

By night, she was the A+ homework helper, master cheeseburger maker, and world’s best listener, always being the closest confidante of her children’s hopes and dreams. She kept a house full of laughter and joy, often made fuller by those who needed a comfortable place to stay with the benefit of her invaluable guidance (and full cupboard of snacks.)

 

Janice Moore died on August 14, 2019 at the age of 73.

 

Born in Maryland on June 11, 1946, she was raised by worldly parents, Doris and Cornelius Moore, in Rye, where she developed an early love of adventure and travel. This lifelong passion not only led her to fly all over the globe, but also inspired her to take spontaneous road trips through America’s backyard. She ziplined through the jungles of Costa Rica, slept under the stars at Yellowstone, and hiked through the canyons in Zion. She was always sure to skip the convenient hotel in order to experience the most remote and unique bed and breakfast.

 

After attending Marymount University, she graduated with a teaching degree from the University of Bridgeport. A preschool teacher for many years, she later continued to inspire a love for learning by opening several of her own tutoring franchise businesses.

She knew every date by heart and which pencil-pushers to lobby for change. Formidably armed with a fierce wit, boundless curiosity, and a passion for reading, rarely was there a subject for which she didn’t have a vivid factoid or opinion to share.

 

Janice Moore leaves behind her four children: Megan Moore Filanowski of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Kathleen Moore Filanowski (Ted McCoy) of Northampton, Mass., Michael Filanowski of Pasadena, Calif., and David Filanowski of New York, N.Y., a grandson, Charles Filanowski-McCoy; her two brothers, John Moore of New Rochelle, and Brian Moore (Ellen) of East Greenwich, R.I.; her good friend and former spouse of 30 years, William Filanowski; her cousin, Noreen Moore of Rye; and her loyal grand-dog Motley.
