Obituaries: Margaret Shand

Margaret C. Shand of Rye, N.Y., passed away on June 16, 2019. She was 91.

Born on August 30, 1927, she was the daughter of Peter Francis and Mabel Duchess Crowley of Winnipeg, Manitoba. She grew up in Manitoba, and, after high school, studied to become a legal secretary.

In 1957, she married Robert Shand and they had three children.

For many years, Mrs. Shand lived in Pearl River, N.Y., where she worked as a micrographics clerk for Lederle Labs and at a number of law firms as a legal secretary post secretarial trainings. She was a longtime member of the Pearl River Hook and Ladder Co. 1 Ladies Auxiliary.

In Rye, where she moved twenty years ago, Margaret Shand was an active member of the Rye Seniors, and enjoyed their trips and activities.

“Margaret will be tremendously missed,” said her family. “She was a marvelous woman who will be remembered for her love for us, her kindness and helpfulness to others, and her wit.”

Margaret Shand is survived by her daughter, Diane Shand Bourkney and her husband Jerry Bourkney; daughters-in-law, Patty Shand and Laura Schnee; her grandchildren, Robert Shand, Stephanie Monteforte, Patrick Shand Jr., Sean, Casey, and Shannon Bourkney; and four great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband, Robert; her sons Robert and Patrick; a sister, Mary Ellen Bawden; and brothers Peter and Paul Crowley.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated June 19 at St. Aedan R. C. Church in Pearl River.

Donations in Margaret Shand’s memory may be made to the American Lung Association.
