Isabella Iannone, a sixth grader at School of the Holy Child, put her geography knowledge to the test when she competed in the New York State National Geographic Geography Bee March 30 in Albany. Despite not making it to the finals, she did very well, receiving a certificate for outstanding performance and a special T-shirt from National Geographic.

Getting to the state competition is no easy feat. To be eligible, students, in grades 4-8, must first win their respective school’s geography bee. Winners then take a qualifying test, and those with the top 100 scores are invited to compete at the state level.

Holy Child social studies and language arts teacher Janet Baker helped Isabella prepare for the contest. “We practiced together every day after school,” she said. “We reviewed sample questions, world countries and capitals, as well as geographic terms and facts.”

Isabella said she was well prepared for the competition, and was thrilled to have the opportunity to represent Holy Child in the bee.
