Season Opener
The Purchase College Performing Arts Center presents the Westchester Philharmonic, featuring conductor Raymond Leppard and cellist Lynn Harrell. The program includes Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3, Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations, Dvorak’s Rondo for Cello and Orchestra, and Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

City Streets

The Bruce Museum presents “The Prints of Martin Lewis” through February 26. The exhibit features more than 30 prints and several canceled plates by the artist from the private collection of Dr. Dorrance Kelly of West Redding, Conn. Lewis was a master of the intaglio techniques of printmaking and experimented with multiple processes including etching, aquatint, engraving, mezzotint, and dry point.

 

Recognized as one of the premier American printmakers of the first half of the 20th century, Lewis’ works capture the mood and light of the urban landscape.

 

OCTOBER 2
Hounds on the Sound
Join the Hounds on the Sound Dog Walk and Festival in New Rochelle and show off your four-legged friend while helping those who are still waiting for a forever home from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. CBS Broadcaster Lou Young and his dog will cut the ribbon and kick off the event at Glen Island Park, joined by hundreds of walkers on a leisurely 1.5-mile stroll along Long Island Sound.

 

More than a dozen shelter dogs available for adoption will lead the crowd. Funds raised support the New Rochelle Humane Society and Pet Rescue of Larchmont. Browse the vendor tables, listen to music, and enjoy refreshments. Have a photo taken of you and your pooch, watch a K-9 demonstration, and stop by the children’s corner for face painting and musical chairs.

The Arts Outdoors
The Bruce Museum’s 30th Annual Outdoor Arts Festival runs from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day on the museum grounds. The juried event features more than 85 artists from across the country. Paintings, photography, drawings, prints, sculptures, and mixed media pieces are all available for purchase. Enjoy live music, educational family activities, and a variety of food choices.

 

One of the Bruce’s most popular events, the show has been named the No. 1 Arts Festival in Connecticut and one of the Top Ten in New England by the Harris Rhodes List.

 

Admission is $8 for non-members, which includes entry to the museum, and free for members and children under 5.

 

OCTOBER 9
Ready, Set, Go!
Runners, walkers, and families can stretch their legs at the Westchester Medical Center Running Festival on the Bronx River Parkway, beginning at the County Center at 8 a.m. The event features both a half- and quarter-marathon for runners, and a half-marathon for walkers. Ages 12 and under are invited to compete in a special non-competitive Kids Fun Run at 10:45 a.m.

OCTOBER 9

To the Rescue
A vintage police car, a 1957 DeSoto ambulance, and a newly restored 1930s fire truck from the Sound Beach Fire Department will be among the classic rescue vehicles on display at the Greenwich Historical Society from 2-4 p.m. Children and adults will have fun contrasting and comparing these antiques with vehicles from Greenwich’s current, high-tech fleet. Board a marine patrol boat or jump into the driver’s seats of patrol vehicles, fire engines, and ambulances, and chat with local police and firemen, and EMT’s.
