Behind the outstanding pitching of Diana King, who struck out 11 batters, Rye Neck’s softball team topped Rye High, 8-1, on April 25 at Rye High.
The Garnets’ only run came in the second inning. Darianne Cardino singled and stole two bases. She scored on Maya FitzGerald’s RBI single.
In the third inning, Rye Neck took a 2-1 lead on a two-RBI single by catcher Nickole Morgan. Rye Neck added five runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth. Jackie DeCicco and Sydney Chiera hit RBI singles, and Brianna Cefaloni blasted an RBI double.
Panthers Coach Joan Spedafino called King and Morgan the stars of the game, but qualified that, adding “every player did amazing.”
Rye Neck’s 7-2 record is due in large part to King, a sophomore. She has pitched every inning of every game, striking out at least ten batters in each game.
“We are working hard and are taking the season one game at a time,’’ Spedafino said.
RHS Coach Alex Tejera said, “We made a few mistakes and they took advantage of it. Their pitcher is very good and against a pitcher like that you can’t afford to make mistakes.”
