4/14 Unoccupied car parked running since morning, Riverside View. Located owner, was flagger for utility company. Car moved from private road.

4/13 Three small chihuahuas running in street in Orchard Lane area. Caller concerned they might be struck by passing vehicle.

 

4/11 Visiting from another PLANET?! Forest Avenue caller reported estimated 50 people on lawn in Milton Point area. Numerous vehicles were blocking roadway as well as many people gathered on property where there was a food truck serving the individuals attending child’s birthday party. Vehicles moved from roadway. Party ended, 5:46 p.m.

 

4/11 Wheel Shame. Caller reported group of youths skateboarding in basketball area of Rye Rec, 4:31 p.m. Basketball, tennis courts cleared.

 

4/11 Health & Safety hazard. Caller stated group of youths were not social distancing and were congregating by County Coach buses, North Street/Nursery Lane, 3:13 p.m. Was mom teaching two children to roller blade. Asked to stay away from buses, family immediately complied.

 

4/11 Verizon store employee reported two suspicious males who he believed were fraudulently attempting to acquire phones. Parties left scene.

 

4/11 Ambulance request. Sylvan Place resident with Covid-19 needed to go to hospital.

4/10 Nightcop? Marriott Courtyard manager stated she had two intoxicated males in lobby and was not sure what they wanted. They were not guests of hotel, 9:33 p.m. GOA.

 

4/9 Hello. It’s 6 p.m., do you know where your children are? Neighborhood trouble. Dispersed group not following social distancing order from High School football field.

 

4/9 White BMW reported tearing up parking lot, South Manursing Island. Vehicle towed to Hannigan’s. Summons issued.

 

4/8 Bogies at 6 o’clock. Extra patrol, Rye Golf Club. Dispersed one group, advised them grounds/roadway were not for general recreation, only for people golfing, 6:06 p.m.

 

4/8 Advised multiple parties at Rye Town Park dog park about social distancing. Parties were, in turn, compliant.

The Other Problem Plaguing Rye: Auto Theft

 

Rye Police Department reports show that auto thefts and attempted thefts are on the rise, with incidents reported in several neighborhoods. Recently, Greenhaven has been a particular target.

According to a bulletin released this week by Rye Police, 47 vehicles have been reported stolen in the City of Rye over the last five years. That number represents a fraction of attempts at theft. All of those 47 vehicles were left <unlocked with the key/FOB left inside.>

Current evidence suggests that a group of youths is targeting suburban communities like Rye, where late models are plentiful and security is lax. In many cases, the stolen vehicles are also being used in the commission of much more serious crimes. RPD advises owners to protect their vehicles by taking the following precautions:

• Double check vehicle is locked before leaving it unattended – cars with keyless entry sound a beep or flash hazards to show they are locked. Important: the wing mirrors will often fold in. <Thieves target vehicles with unfolded mirrors.>
• New doorbell cameras can be placed to monitor a vehicle when it is parked, wake up and detect movements near the car, and send a live stream to your phone.
• Use a GPS tracking devices to increase the chance of recovery and possibly reduce annual insurance premium
• Ideally, <you should never leave any valuables in your car.>, even if you lock it. If you do leave a bag or phone behind, make sure that you stow them out of sight.
• Don’t leave your garage door opener in your car. Make a habit of keeping the remote in your purse/pocket or carry it into the house and keep it with your keys.
