It was with high hopes that Moses Brown School made the long bus ride to Rye from Providence on Saturday to play the Rye Country Day sticksters. The ride back was twice as long. The Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the contest and never looked back, icing the visitors 7-0.

Blake Beber scored twice, with Chase Jaeger, Serafim Rocco, Henry Alderson-Smith, Kyle Halloran, and Jeffrey Chen all finding the twine. Eric Herbst got the shutout in the Rye Country Day net.

The Quakers’ netminders weren’t so fortunate. After a fairly soft goal made it 3-0 halfway through the second period, the Moses Brown coach pulled his goalie. He wasn’t on the bench long. After the Wildcats took advantage of a tiring Moses Brown defense and nearly absent forecheck to score three more times in five minutes, the starter was back between the pipes. A late second-period tally made it seven.

Wildcats Coach Erik Kallio summed it up this way: “I thought it was our most complete performance of the year, from our entire defensive group to the three lines that we rolled out almost the entire game.  There was never a let down in our team’s intensity and it showed on the scoreboard.”

He added, “It is the right time of year to start playing some of our best hockey.”
