Residents Are Urged to Get Their Flu Shot

Cases of influenza are widespread, so County Executive Robert P. Astorino and Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler, MD advise residents who have not already done so to get their flu shot and to take simple steps to protect their health and that of their families.

“You should always get a flu shot each year to protect yourself,’’ said Dr. Amler. “Many local pharmacies still have flu vaccine, and it’s never too late to benefit.’’

“Three simple steps that can help you stay healthy are washing your hands, staying home when you’re sick, and avoiding others who are not well,’’ said Astorino.

The health department is contacting providers to assess vaccine availability and to determine how they can acquire additional supplies if needed.

Each year, the flu is responsible for approximately 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths in the U.S. This translates into the potential for 100 to 125 flu-related deaths per year in Westchester’s population.

This year’s flu vaccine provides protection against the three strains of the virus that are circulating this season.

People most at risk for complications from the flu include pregnant women, adults age 50 and older, children under the age of 5 and their caregivers, residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, and anyone who has certain underlying medical conditions.
