The Garnets hosted the Keio Academy Unicorns in a battle of lefties at Grainger Field April 10. It was the Garnets’ southpaw, Luke Meyerson, who came away with the W, striking out eight and allowing the boys from Purchase only a first-inning run on an infield single and a double, sandwiched around a balk.

Meanwhile, Rye’s bats, and legs, were doing the damage. With two out in the bottom of the first, Griff Tutun drove a double over the left fielder’s head, took third on a wild pitch and came home on a throwing error. Three walks and a pop fly that landed on the right-field line made it 3-1 after two.

It was still a two-run game in the bottom of the fourth, when a couple of hit batters opened the floodgates. A walk and three hits later, the Garnets were ahead by seven.

After throwing 104 pitches through six innings, Meyerson gave way to Beau Turcotte. The righty reliever yielded a double but closed out the game himself with a one-hopper that he tossed to first.

Rye Coach Michael Bruno was pleased after the game. “Keio can be tough, and I thought we battled pretty hard. We have a bunch of stuff to work on, but when you’re 5-0 to start the season…”

Asked what there could be in an 8-1 win that needed work, he became serious. “I thought we gave away some at-bats. Luke picked up steam as he went on, but we have to start the game that way.”

After a week of baseball at Disney World over spring break (during which they’ll play fellow snowbirds Nyack), the Garnets return to host Yorktown April 23.
