Coming off a week in which they split a pair of games with sectional power Byram Hills and trounced Horace Greeley 11-0, the Garnets sent staff ace Luke Meyerson to the mound against visiting Harrison May 12. Two hours later, Coach Michael Bruno was tossing him the game ball in appreciation of his complete-game, 9-3 win at Feeley Field.

Afterwards, the Coach explained his choice. “Luke went all the way today without giving up an earned run. We didn’t make it easy on him, but he came through.”

Bruno was talking about the brace of uncharacteristic errors that gave the Huskies their two runs in the second inning after the Garnets bunched three hits for a couple of runs in the first. But an unruffled Meyerson proceeded to set down Rye’s archrivals despite loud and prolonged heckling from the visiting dugout.

The home team went back up by two after a one-out single by shortstop Griffin Tutun, a wild pitch, and two more base hits. Centerfielder Tim DeGraw, with two singles and three walks on the day, drove in another run in the fourth. The Garnets’ bats would add two more to make the score 7-2. The Harrison dugout was pretty quiet the rest of the way.

This week saw the Garnets crack the Journal News’ Section 1 top-ten power rankings, entering the list at number nine “after coming through the teeth of their schedule with some things to feel good about.” If they get a few more games like the one Meyerson pitched Monday, Rye should be all right.

The Garnets travel to top-ranked Roy C. Ketchham for a tournament at Duchess Stadium May 17.
