After Rye High’s 4+ boat won the state championship in Saratoga in the spring, all four rowers in the boat graduated. “The boys have some big shoes to fill,” said Coach Stan Nelson. There are 40 boys on the team, including five seniors and nine novices. Thirteen boys made Varsity this year. While the coach is still fine tuning the final lineup, it’s safe to say that seniors Liam Wilson and Alex Sutherland and junior John Daley are assured seats when the 4+ boat races in The Head of Charles October 17.

“It’s down to eight boys, but they are still fighting for the seats,” said Coach Nelson. “I wouldn’t be surprised if a sophomore wins one of the seats.”

Competing among themselves for seats in the racing boats is a huge motivating force for the boys to work as hard as they can. Coach Nelson explained there are several criteria, including indoor rowing tests and seat racing in pieces. Seat racing involves two pairs of boys rowing/racing side-by-side and then switching partners to determine who is the fastest. The outcome of the two regattas in early October will be the final determining factor.

The Crew team (boys and girls) hopes that everyone will support its annual ergathon fundraiser Saturday, September 26 from 9-3 at Rye Recreation. Each rower has lined up sponsors offering to donate according to the number of meters rowed. The team’s goal is 10,000 meters. The team also hopes to raise more funds through its bake and T-shirt sales.
