RHS Football Now 4-2: Harrison is Next

Rye’s roller coaster season continued Friday with a 30-22 win over Tappan Zee after losing to John Jay a week earlier. The Garnets are 4-2 going into Saturday’s home game against Harrison at 1:30 p.m.

At Tappan Zee, RHS quarterback Andrew Livingston threw two touchdowns and scrambled for a third. Catching his touchdown passes were Jack Hasselmann and Chris Santangelo.

Livingston kicked a 25-yard field goal at the end of the first half to give the Garnets a 10-9 lead. He ran one in for the final touchdown as well.

At the October 6 game against John Jay at Cross River, Rye started off well, but fell behind and never regained the lead on the road against a physical Indians squad. The game, however, was not a complete loss. Running back Shane O’Malley was happy with the offense’s performance overall. “We played a great game. We were able to establish our ground game early and a lot of people stepped up and made good plays.” Yet work still needs to be done. O’Malley went on to say, “Moving forward, we’ve got to stay focused and practice hard.”

Danny Sullivan, Conor Murphy, and Tim DeGraw scored the Garnet’s three touchdowns. But later on in the game, DeGraw, arguably Rye’s best offensive weapon, suffered a torn MCL rendering him out for the remainder of the season. Junior tailback and defensive back Murphy said: “Losing Tim leaves a big void in our offense and defense as he was starting both ways as just a sophomore. He was one of the most athletic and fastest players on the team, so it is going to be hard to compensate for his loss at wide receiver. New people will just have to step up, especially in time for the Harrison game.”

Rye goes up against Harrison without one of its best playmakers. Other players need to rise up and fill in for DeGraw’s explosiveness.

Two weeks ago, Rye pulled off a 28-0 victory over Horace Greeley, adding to the interesting plotline this season. Rye has been up and down all year, with flashes of brilliance and some poor performances mixed in.
