On October 3, Rye High played a tough game against a very physical Yorktown team, and came up short in the 4-3 loss. Yorktown scored three minutes into the game on a breakaway that seemed to catch the Garnets off guard. After that, the Garnets seemed to be chasing the Huskers to make up for a one-goal deficit for the rest of the game. Thirty minutes after Yorktown scored, Isabel Castro knotted the game on a header off a corner kick by freshman Sara DeGraw. The score held until halftime.

In the second half, Coach Rich Savage substituted back-up sophomore goalie Hannah Friedrich for Maddy Eck “to give her game time experience.” Again, the Huskers opened the scoring six minutes in.

Eight minutes later, Izzy Hentschel evened the score on a long shot, assisted by Molly Broderick. Yorktown took the lead again four minutes later. After a long nine minutes, Lily Friedrich evened the score on a PK. With four minutes left, the Huskers took the lead on a questionable play, after the ref failed to call a flagrant foul on Yorktown.

Coach Savage praised his team for “giving it their all,” but said that for a young team to lose a key player (DeGraw) to an injury in the second half, and face a very strong wind, their all just wasn’t enough.

Friedrich finished with five saves, allowing three goals and Yorktown goalie Alesa LaPierre made 16 saves.

The Garnets’ record is now 4-2-3. They play three games before press time and play at Port Chester on October 14.
