A trio of Rye tennis players advanced during League Championships at Harrison High School. Two of the players, Harry Bonay and Grant DeBease, placed third in the League in doubles playoffs, qualifying for Sectional competition at SUNY Purchase last week.

Bonay and DeBease, both juniors, won three sets against a Huskies’ doubles squad May 16, by scores of 6-1, 7-4, and 10-8. The duo fell behind 5-1 in the third set before winning the super tiebreaker match. The pair advanced again May 17, topping Keio Academy to finish third in the League.

In singles competition, James Reid jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, and won his first set 6-4. But the RHS sophomore lost the final two sets 6-1 and 10-1.

Coach Sue Dickson called Reid’s performance “well fought, but not enough in the end.”

Four other Rye High players dropped indoor tennis matches at Armonk during the opening round of League competition in what Dickson called “heartbreaking” losses.
