The RHS field hockey team came out swinging in its season opening games. After defeating Valhalla 7-0 in a scrimmage on September 8, the Garnets won two non-league games. Rye topped John Jay 4-1 on September 10 and Rye Neck 2-0 three days later.
Senior captain Alex Bennett scored twice against John Jay. JoJo Little and senior captain Scarlett Sulliman each scored once.
Against Rye Neck, Maddie Bianci scored on an assist by Alex Bennett and Little scored the other goal.
After their scrimmage against Valhalla, Coach Emily Fitzgerald said the game (the 2012 team’s first) was a good way to start getting their foot work and passing game on track and that they have to pay attention to details as well as basics.
Coach Emily Fitzgerald said she was pleased by the wins. “We are starting to come together as a team,’’ she said. “We have some players stepping up and doing well.’’
On September 15, Rye’s home game against Fox Lane ended in a 0-0 tie. Senior captain Lacey Collins had 11 saves as goalkeeper.
Coach Fitzgerald said the team is still trying to recover from its loss of nine of 11 starters from last year’s team. “We were shaky on defense,’’ she said. “Our team goal is to work to improve each day at practice and each game.”
