RHS TRACK: Ryan, McDermott Lead Garnets at County Meet

Rye’s Winter Track coaches, Jim Yedowitz for the boys and John McGee for the girls, expressed different degrees of satisfaction with the performance of their squads at the two big meets of the season – the New Balance Games at the Armory in New York January 25 and the Westchester County Championships on the following Saturday.

“Scorewise, the boys did not do particularly well at Counties…only 11 total points. We’re probably a year away from being very competitive at the higher level meets such as the Westchester Championships. The highlight for us was sophomore Jack Ryan, who won the 3,200-meter race to become the County champ at that distance.”

Meanwhile, Coach McGee was able to tick off some nice results. “Maggie McDermott was 5th overall in the 1,500 meters. And she teamed with Anji Logue, Hana Kano, and Jackie McGowan in the mile relay for another 5th. Also, Charlotte Kirby was 6th in the high jump. The girls did very well.”

Coach Yedowitz said: “We had 22 personal bests among the athletes at Counties, so I was pleased with that. And a week earlier, Ryan Bird, Jack Smith, Kenta Takatsu, and Jack Ryan ran the New Balance 4 x 800 relay in 8:24.0, which was the best time for Rye in five years.”
