This past weekend, the Rye Country Day Boys’ squash team traveled to the Loomis Chaffee School north of Hartford to play for the New England “B” Championship. After three full days of matches, the team ended in a tie with the host team at 94 points to earn a share of the championship.

Each of the seven Wildcats contributed a highlight win in the tightly contested event. Coach Brian O’Callaghan gave us the blow-by-blow. “By Saturday afternoon, it became clear that we needed to win all of our matches in order to secure the championship. Carl Shuck and Eli Rattner both won thrilling matches in five games, after being down 2-0, to keep our hopes alive. Shuck ended up finishing in fifth place in the 1st flight, and Rattner finished 9th in the third flight. In addition, Rick Burke, Kyle Eagan, and Jared Yanis all won their respective brackets, earning maximum points for the team. Finally, Hunter Chun and Jack Mattson were both able to make it to the semifinals of their brackets, eventually finishing in 3rd and 4th place, respectively.

Coach O’Callaghan turned reflective. “As a coach, it was wonderful to see the team play the best squash of the season at the right time. I have to thank all the parents for their support during the weekend.”

Shuck, who played at number one all season, will return to lead the Wildcats in 2015-16.
