Rye Country Day School Evacuated

Rye Country Day School was evacuated Tuesday due to a telephone threat that turned out to be a hoax.

About 700 Rye Country Day students were evacuated Tuesday afternoon due to a telephone threat to a school employee. The students were taken to a private facility used in the event of emergencies. Rye City Schools decided to lock down its schools and cancel all outdoor activities as a precautionary measure, according to city officials.

Rye Police conducted a search of the private school, and reported no danger at this time.

RPD evacuated Rye Country Day School after someone called about noon Tuesday, according to Rye City Police Commissioner William R. Connors. The call was an attempt to scam money out of an elderly employee, Connors said.

The employee has received similar calls in the past, but this was the first threat mentioning explosives or snipers, Connors said. The Village of Rye Brook Police Department was investigating prior threats.

RPD, Rye Brook, county and state police, as well as the FBI, are investigating Tuesday’s threatening phone call and working to find its origin.

Rye Country School also suspended all outdoor activity due to the incident. The school is expected to reopen during normal hours on Wednesday.
