Garnets Shuts Out Bronxville for 10th Victory
By Mitch Silver
Rye Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey played host to Bronxville October 9 and came away with a 5-0 victory. The Garnets earned 14 penalty corners, while the Broncos had none. Rye goalie Catia Lai had no saves to make.
“We had a great game today,” Head Coach Kelly Vegliante said. “We have some wonderful athletes on the team, with a lot of speed. Earlier in the season we were just getting to know each other; now everyone anticipates where their teammates are without looking around.”
The Broncos came into the game with a 6-3-1 record, while Rye had a 9-1, with their only loss to John Jay-Cross River. “They seemed to know what we were doing on our penalty corner plays,” Coach Vegliante said. “I spent a lot of halftime and the third- quarter break moving things around.”
It worked. At 9:35 of the first period, junior midfielder Charlotte Langer scored on a tip-in after the Garnets took their second corner. The score stayed that way until 14:35 of the second period, when her classmate, Scarlette Karmilowicz, rang up a tally after Rye’s fourth corner.
Almost immediately, sophomore forward Lilly Whaling hit a bounce shot that sneaked in to the goalkeeper’s right. It was ruled no goal, but Rye scored for real seconds after their sixth corner. Senior Maggie Broderick, honored with her classmates on the team for Senior Day, sent a pass across the face of goal to Karmilowicz, who pushed it on to senior Captain Ellie Hedges, who buried her shot.
Rye dominated play in midfield, earning more corners in the second half. Ellie Hedges scored on a broken play at 9:34 of the fourth quarter before Maggie Broderick closed out the scoring after Rye’s 14th and final corner. On the game, junior midfielder Shay Ott had three assists.
Senior Day saw the five seniors on the team — Maggie Broderick, Ellie Hedges (captain), Emma Kelly Walsh, Catia Lai (captain), and Morgan Puzzuoli — honored with their parents.
