The skies threatened to let loose all day April 7. When the downpour finally came, a little after 5 p.m., it washed out the 2nd doubles match between Rye Neck and Croton-Harmon. Because the locals had already won the first four of five matches, though, it couldn’t expunge Rye Neck’s victory. It evened their season, as they lost their 5-0 to Pleasantville a week earlier.

For the record, Rye Neck didn’t drop a set. Playing once again at 1st singles, senior Danny King won 6-4, 6-2; and the newly formed 1st doubles team of Charlie Bermingham and Brandon Kates took their match 6-2, 6-1. At 2nd singles, Tom Collins bageled his opponent, while 3rd singles Alex Styler nearly did the same, winning 6-0, 6-1.

In a league with tough teams like Pleasantville and Ossining, Coach Christopher Lincoln will be happy if the Panthers finish the regular season in the top two, earning a bye into the post-season tournament.

“We have a lot of experienced players at the top of our roster, led by four-year varsity players King, Bermingham, and Sameer Naeem. Collins, Styler, and Kates all have three seasons on the varsity (only freshman Jake Fagan at second doubles lacks multi-year play). So with them leading the way, we have a good chance of grabbing that first-round bye.”

After facing Valhalla and Westlake, the Black Cats will host league power Ossining April 23, post-press time.
