This year, Rye Neck worked on improving the curriculum in a number of areas, including the ongoing library project. Over the summer the tennis courts on the High School campus were repaired, much to the excitement of Rye Neck students and community members. Other projects were completed at the high school and at Daniel Warren Elementary School.

Rye Neck has also been reviewing and revamping District communications. They have not only updated the look of the publications, but now have a more dynamic and useful website.

The District received a great deal of positive feedback after launching the Blackboard Connect system as a means to alert families about school emergencies. They will continue to use the system this year.

 

There were two retirements at the end of the last school year: Ms. Amy Paul who taught math in the high school for 35 years and Mr. Mark DiMaggio, Director of Music, who’d worked in the District for 38 years. A fond farewell to both.

 

As the new school year begins, Rye Neck plans to move forward and enjoy a year filled with growth through exploration and the commitment of their dedicated staff.

 

Rye Neck High Remembers 9/11

 

Rye Neck High School will commemorate the tenth anniversary of September 11th with an assembly September 9, leading to activities throughout the school year.

 

As Principal Barbara Ferraro noted, this year’s freshmen were kindergarteners when the profound tragedy occurred. “September 11 left an indelible mark on us, but the students don’t remember that day and what followed. We want to keep the memory alive,” she said. “The lessons that came from this tragedy speak to the spirit of America.”

 

Organized by Social Studies Department Chair Karen Parisi, the assembly will feature an abbreviated version of “Rebirth,” a documentary that chronicles the lives of a number of victims directly affected by 9/11. A non-profit organization rooted in community participation and the strength of the human spirit coping with disaster, Project Rebirth premiered the film at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

 

One of the profiles features an adolescent boy who lost his mother. The film also tracks the entire rebuilding of Ground Zero through multi-camera, time-lapse photography. After the screening, the organization’s Director of Outreach, Paige Panzner-Kozek, will address the students.

 

Principal Ferraro expects that the assembly’s message of rebuilding lives, as well as rebuilding the city, will strike a chord. Ms. Parisi said, “It’s a day of awareness that will be carried over throughout the year with fundraising events and school activities.”
