Rye’s zip code ranked 34th of 28,725 U.S. communities in charitable giving in a national study released Wednesday by the Chronicle of Philanthropy. (on the Internet, see http://philanthropy.com/section/How-America-Gives/621/)

The study by the Washington, D.C.-based newspaper also ranked Westchester 12th among 3,115 counties nationwide, based on 2008 data from the IRS.

Rye’s charitable contributions totaled $110 million, according to the study. Of nearby communities, only Scarsdale ranked higher in 12th place, giving $165 million that year.

The study, titled “How America Gives,” calculated the median amount and proportion of income for taxpayers earning more than $50,000 annually by zip code, county, city, and town, which can be looked up via an interactive map. Rye’s median contribution was $21,134, which accounted for 5.2 percent of its taxpayers’ annual income.

Westchester County taxpayers gave a total of $1.2 billion that year, about 5.4 percent of their income, according to the study.
