RYE RESCUES: Week of September 12

Have you ever driven down Milton Road and found yourself wondering, “Did I really just see a dog sitting on the roof of that garage?”

Have you ever driven down Milton Road and found yourself wondering, “Did I really just see a dog sitting on the roof of that garage?” across from the marina? Well you did, and that dog’s name is Roxie. Laura and Kirk Brett and their three daughters rescued Roxie from a local shelter – here is her story.

Where did you find Roxie?
We found her at adoption day at North Shore Animal League (www.animalleague.org). We waited in line for hours to get in to adopt a dog.  It was crazy!  When we finally got inside the shelter, Roxy was the first dog we saw.  She practically jumped out of her kennel and into our laps!

What was it that made you think Roxie was the right fit for your family?
She chose us — we just accepted her choice.

What made you decide to rescue?
We always wanted to adopt a dog from a shelter to give those dogs homes.  One of our daughters had a dog allergy and we thought we had to get a non-shedding dog.  It’s hard to find a non-shedding dog at a shelter so our first family dog was not a rescue.   Sadly, though, our dog died.  We were all very upset and wanted to give a home to a dog that didn’t have a home.  It made it easier to accept the loss of our dog.  We also learned our daughter’s allergy had improved so it was possible to rescue a dog — shedding or no shedding.

How old is your dog?
Roxie is 6.

What made you decide on older or puppy?
We knew that older dogs have a harder time finding homes.

What parts of Rye does Roxie like the most?
She likes the marina and the roof of our garage.

Can you tell us some funny things your dog does?
Roxie climbs up on the roof of our garage and watches (and barks) as people go by. She hates bicyclists! She also looks both ways before crossing the street. Seriously!
