Alana Burrows, a senior at School of the Holy Child, received the 2021 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Social Justice Award for her work with the White Plains Youth Bureau’s Youth Court Program. The award was presented by the African American Men of Westchester, Inc. Alana was recognized by the MLK Legacy Award committee for her “talent, fortitude, and genuine concern for the betterment of humankind.”

In her own words, this inspiring young woman explained what she has gained from working in the program: “have enjoyed taking on the roles of defense attorney and youth advocate, which have allowed me the opportunity to help give the youths a second chance and the ability to pursue their interests and goals.” She continued, Many of the youths commit misdemeanors because of peer pressure or a lack of guidance. I help them discover their strengths and talents, as well as connect them to resources in the community. Last spring, I was able to be a part of a drug-abuse campaign and a video for healthcare workers.

In the months ahead, Alana looks forward to working alongside fellow Holy Child students who finished their training last month and are eager to take on new cases. While she also looks forward to graduation, she said, “I am truly going to miss this program.”
