Keeping in line with Major League Baseball’s trade deadline and expansion schedule, Rye High’s Assistant Principal Julia Chung has now joined the special education squad as Assistant Director, while newcomer Robert Zegarelli takes over her roster spot as Assistant Principal at the high school.

Zegarelli, who grew up in Westchester and graduated from Sleepy Hollow High School, joins the Rye High team from North Carolina’s Raleigh area, where he was Assistant Principal at South Point High School in Belmont. Before his tenure at South Point, he worked as a math facilitator at Oakhurst Elementary School in Charlotte.

His background includes planning for the implementation of the APPR (Annual Professional Performance Review) rating system, which made its debut in Rye City Schools in April. He also has experience analyzing this data to set goals and benchmarks for curriculum planning.

Zegarelli holds a B.A. from East Carolina University and an M.A. in education from the University of North Carolina.

Julia Chung has served as Assistant Principal since July 2008. Prior to that, she worked as an assistant principal for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

In the special education department here, Chung will be working to develop the K-12 special education program and will monitor the implementation of the Common Core curriculum for special education students. In addition, she’ll help analyze data for improving the performance of special education students. The Rye Middle School math scores for special education students have been falling over the past few years and the district is eager to figure out why.

Chung has an impressive educational background. She is currently working to complete a doctorate in educational leadership from Manhattanville College. She already has an M.A. in educational leadership and administration from California State University in Los Angeles. She also holds a B.S. in mathematics and math certification from California State University at Northridge.
