Celebrate science with the Rye Free Reading Room on the Village Green Sunday from 11-2. Elementary school-age children and their families have a lot to look forward to.
The library reached out to many of Rye’s other organizations to partner with them in introducing young children to general science and generating curiosity and interest. Rye Nature Center is bringing turtles. The Rye Arts Center will share its exciting Maker program. The Westchester Children’s Museum, which is close to opening on the Playland Boardwalk, will offer several activities. Mad Science shows will run throughout the day.
Local high school teachers put out a call for teen-age volunteers and many will be running the activities. “We thought this was a good opportunity for mentoring,” said the co-chairs. Library Director Chris Shoemaker added, “Watching teenagers launch marshmallows is so much fun!”
The Auxiliary committee created a brochure for children to carry with them and complete. “We hope that the children will come away realizing science is all around them and have a deeper understanding of it can help us protect all its inhabitants,” said Ruddy and Belville.
The Celebration of Science will be held rain or shine. Tickets are $40 per family at the gate, $35 if ordered ahead of time via ryelibrary.org/sciencefestival.
