Rye High School’s girls varsity rugby team went nearly undefeated last year – which is both a challenge and an inspiration for this season’s players.
A change in how the state classifies public high schools of varying sizes has altered the annual mix of opponents for Rye and some other schools.
In its first decade, Rye High’s boys varsity rugby program has grown in size and popularity – landing two state championships and its first invite to the National High School Rugby Championships.
This year’s team is led by a trio of captains, plus a talented group of five juniors who are already committed to NCAA Division I programs.
Romano said the Garnets will face stiff competition this year, particularly from Harrison for the league title and from Scarsdale for the Section I team championship.
